A Step-by-Step Look Inside Our Design Process

You have three kids, a full calendar, and a home that should feel like your sanctuary — but instead feels unfinished, chaotic, or simply not reflective of this season of life.

Many of our clients come to us at this exact stage. They’ve never worked with an interior designer before, but they know they’re ready for help — not just with selecting furniture, but with creating a cohesive, personalized home that functions beautifully for their family.

So let me walk you through exactly what it’s like to work with JLL Interiors.

What I wish every homeowner understood when hiring a designer:

Some people may hesitate before hiring a designer because they worry it means giving up control. Or they assume they’ll be overwhelmed with constant decisions.

The truth? You can be as involved as you want to be.

Some of our clients want a completely turnkey experience — a whole house design with one option presented. Others love seeing a few beautifully refined options before making the final call.

At JLL Interiors, we tailor the process to your personality and your bandwidth. If your days are filled with school drop-offs, sports practices, and managing a household, we step in and carry the mental load. If you enjoy being part of the creative decisions, we collaborate closely.

Hiring a designer doesn’t remove you from the process — it removes the overwhelm.

So what is it like working with an interior designer?

Let's dive in to our process. We have four phases we bring every project through. Each phase has many steps. Not every project needs to have every step, but the phases still apply. At JLL Interiors we have project management systems that each client project is entered in, ensuring that the project stays on track, on budget, and has a beautiful end result.

PHASE 1: ONBOARDING

Discovery Call → Virtual Meeting → Initial Visit → Scope Creation → Scope Presentation

We begin with a discovery call to understand your goals, your frustrations, and your investment range. This conversation helps us determine if we’re the right fit for each other.

Next, we walk you through our detailed process so you know exactly what to expect — no surprises, no guesswork.

During the in-home visit, we tour your space, take measurements and photos, and talk through how your family truly lives. Where do backpacks pile up? Where do the kids do homework? How do you entertain?

From there, we create a detailed scope of work outlining everything our team will handle — from design to procurement to project oversight. We present your design fee, review the contract, and establish a tailored furnishings budget specific to your project.

Clarity at this stage creates confidence for everything that follows.

Phase 2: RESEARCH

Client Interviews → Trade Day → Concept Development

Now we design with intention.

We conduct in-depth client interviews because your home should reflect your lifestyle — not a trend.

We ask questions like:

  • Who cooks and how often?

  • Do you host holidays?

  • What hotels make you feel relaxed and inspired?

  • How do you want your mornings to feel?

These conversations allow us to design a home that supports your family rhythm while still feeling elevated and refined.

If construction or renovation is involved, we host a trade day where all trades — electrical, flooring, wallpaper, and more — walk the site together. This proactive step ensures everyone understands the vision early, minimizing costly changes later.

We then present initial floorplans and a conceptual design direction that sets the tone for your entire home.

Phase 3: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Design Presentations → Refinements → Final Design

This is where the vision becomes detailed and cohesive.

Depending on the scope, we hold multiple presentations, gathering your feedback and refining selections along the way.

Your final design presentation includes:

  • Comprehensive floorplans

  • Construction drawings and elevations

  • Furniture and lighting selections

  • Plumbing fixtures

  • Materials and finish schedules

We present the home as a complete story — ensuring that every room flows effortlessly into the next.

This phase eliminates decision fatigue. Every element has been thoughtfully curated, layered, and considered.

Phase 4: IMPLEMENTATION

Ordering → Tracking → Site Visits → Contractor Communication → Installation → Reveal

This is where we carry the weight.

Once approvals are finalized, we:

  • Send drawings and schedules to the contractor

  • Place and manage all furnishings orders

  • Track deliveries and handle vendor communication

  • Conduct site visits to ensure the design is executed correctly

You won’t be chasing shipments or managing trades. That’s our role.

When construction is complete, we coordinate installation and styling. On reveal day, you walk into a fully transformed space — layered, personal, and ready to live in.

For clients who choose our styling package, we add the finishing touches: art, accessories, and those subtle details that elevate a house into a home.

Finally, we conduct a thorough walkthrough and manage any final touch-ups to ensure everything is exactly as it should be.
