There is something especially meaningful about designing spaces for children. When clients come to me to create rooms for their little ones, I get particularly excited. Designing children’s spaces invites a level of creativity that feels playful and deeply personal—often, the traditional “rules” of design soften, and clients become more open to thinking outside the box to create something truly special.
And when it comes to welcoming a new baby? It is one of my favorite types of projects.
A nursery becomes so much more than a beautifully designed room—it is the backdrop for late-night snuggles, first milestones, bedtime routines, and memories that families will cherish for years to come. Because of that, I always approach nursery design with longevity in mind.
My goal is to create spaces that feel undeniably sweet for this fleeting season of babyhood while remaining versatile enough to evolve alongside the child as they grow. Rather than designing rooms that feel overly themed or quickly outgrown, I focus on creating a timeless foundation—one that can easily adapt through thoughtful layers over time.
For this project, our vision centered around creating a timeless layered nursery—a space filled with warmth, character, and thoughtful details that feel collected over time rather than purchased all at once.

Starting with the Hero Pieces
Whenever I design a nursery, I begin by sourcing what I call the hero pieces—the foundational elements that will remain in the room for years to come.
For me, those anchor points are almost always the rug and window treatments.
These are the investment pieces that establish the tone of the room and create the layered feeling that makes a nursery feel elevated, intentional, and enduring. In a timeless layered nursery, these foundational selections are everything. A thoughtfully selected rug grounds the room with texture and warmth, while custom window treatments soften the space and add a level of polish that instantly makes the room feel complete.
While paint, wallpaper, bedding, and even lighting can easily be updated as a child grows and preferences evolve, the rug and window treatments provide a timeless design framework that can carry the room beautifully into future seasons of life.
Project Hillside: An Heirloom Layered Nursery Full of Character
I am so excited to finally share this nursery reveal from our Project Hillside English Cottage project. When designing this space, our vision was clear: we wanted the room to feel like an timeless layered nursery—heirloom, collected, and rich with character. Sweet enough for a baby boy, yet sophisticated enough to grow beautifully with him over time.

Timeless and Layered Nursery Details
The room began as a simple white space—a blank canvas full of possibility. By anchoring the design around the rug and custom window treatments, we created depth and softness from the start, allowing the rest of the room to unfold naturally in layers. The rug is wool so it is ready to withstand years of play time and underfoot traffic. We chose a diamond carpet pattern that is classic yet playful. The window treatment fabric is a celedon blue and brown stripe on linen that leans masculine- perfect as the child ages. We layered the drapery over the existing functioning roman shades as an extra layer of blackout for functionaility.
One of the pieces in this room I am particularly in love with is bobbin book shelf. This is truly an heirloom piece that was hand made in England. The craftsmanship on this book shelf is truly a work of art.

Rather than leaning into overly youthful themes, we focused on creating a nursery that feels enduring and personal—one that could evolve effortlessly as this little boy grows. Through layered textiles, meaningful details, and timeless foundational pieces, the space feels warm, welcoming, and intentionally curated. We layered in different patterns including this western toile pattern for pillows that give the space that nursery wimsy. The blue checked fabric on the custom floor lampshade leans little boy paired with the delicate brass floor lamp base.
Finally the mini gallery wall above the ctib was collected over time and comprises of prints, vintage art, and hand painted canvas from an artist in france.
The end result is a timeless layered nursery that feels collected rather than decorated—a room that honors this sweet season of life while thoughtfully growing alongside the family.
